Apple Watch Series 12 and watchOS 27: Touch ID, New Chip, and Satellite Upgrades Expected This Fall
Breaking: Apple Watch Series 12 and watchOS 27 Details Emerge
Apple is preparing to launch the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 this September, alongside a major software update — watchOS 27. According to leaked internal code and supply chain reports, the new wearables will feature Touch ID, a fresh processor, and expanded satellite capabilities. The company is also set to preview watchOS 27 at WWDC 2026 on June 8.

Touch ID May Return to Apple Watch
Leaked Apple software code suggests Touch ID could be integrated into the side button of the Series 12 and Ultra 4. This would allow users to unlock their watch via fingerprint instead of a passcode. However, “credible sources such as Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman and supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo have yet to confirm the feature,” according to an industry insider who spoke on condition of anonymity. “There’s no guarantee Apple will move forward — even though the code exists, plans can change,” the source added.
New Chip After One-Year Hiatus
After the Series 11 and Ultra 3 reused the S10 chip, leaked code indicates the Series 12 and Ultra 4 will get a new processor, likely branded S11 or S12. “Performance improvements are expected either way,” noted a hardware analyst close to Apple’s supply chain. The refresh marks a return to annual silicon upgrades for the flagship models.
watchOS 27 Brings New Modular Watch Face
watchOS 27 will reportedly include a Modular Ultra watch face variant, previously exclusive to the Apple Watch Ultra. This face will offer customizable complications for all compatible models. Apple has promised “AI advancements” at WWDC 2026, which likely extend to the watch OS.
New Satellite Features on WatchOS 27
Building on the Ultra 3’s satellite connectivity, iOS 27 will introduce up to five new satellite features, two of which are expected to come to watchOS: Apple Maps via satellite and Photos support for Messages via satellite. This follows Amazon’s recent acquisition of Globalstar, the satellite provider behind Apple’s emergency services. “The integration will make the Apple Watch more independent from the iPhone,” said a telecom analyst.

Background
The Apple Watch Series 11, Ultra 3, and SE 3 all shipped with the same S10 chip in 2025. A new Apple Watch SE is not expected this year — that model typically sees refreshes every two to three years. watchOS 27 developer betas will be available immediately after WWDC, with a public beta in July and a full release in September alongside the new hardware.
What This Means
If Touch ID materializes, it would significantly enhance security and convenience, especially for users who find passcodes cumbersome during workouts. A new chip promises smoother performance for Apple Intelligence features like Workout Buddy and Notification Summaries. Expanded satellite capabilities could make the Apple Watch a more viable standalone device for outdoor enthusiasts and travelers. However, with Amazon’s acquisition of Globalstar, questions linger about long-term satellite service costs. For now, Apple appears committed to deepening the watch’s independence from the iPhone.
