From 2017 Announcement to Assembly Line

Elon Musk first unveiled the Class 8 Semi at a glitzy event in November 2017, promising remarkable performance: zero to 60 mph in five seconds, a 500-mile range, and shatter-resistant glass. Major corporations like Walmart placed early orders, expecting deliveries by 2019. However, production delays pushed the timeline repeatedly. Pilot deliveries began in 2022, but it wasn't until early 2024 that Tesla released final specs and, in late April, rolled the first Semi off its high-volume line.

WattEV's Massive Order

In a significant vote of confidence, WattEV ordered 370 Tesla Semis in early May 2024, worth over $100 million. WattEV operates a truck-as-a-service model, supplying electric freight operations and charging infrastructure to companies. The first 50 units are expected by the end of this year, with full delivery by 2027. These trucks will be supported by megawatt-charging stations in Oakland, Fresno, Stockton, and Sacramento.

Tesla Semi Specifications and Performance

The Tesla Semi is an all-electric Class 8 truck designed for medium- and long-haul routes. The base model offers a range of about 320 miles, while the long-range version (originally promised at 500 miles) remains in development. The truck's rapid acceleration and low operating costs make it an attractive option for fleet operators looking to reduce fuel and maintenance expenses. With the factory now running at scale, Tesla is positioned to deliver on its decade-old vision.

Environmental Impact of Heavy-Duty Vehicles

Medium- and heavy-duty vehicles, including trucks and buses, represent only about 8% of vehicles on the road but account for a staggering 35% of carbon dioxide emissions from road transport. They also emit disproportionate amounts of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter, contributing to air pollution and public health issues. Electrifying this sector is critical to meeting climate goals.
