KDE Plasma 6.7 Beta Unleashes Major Remote Desktop and Notification Upgrades
KDE Plasma 6.7 beta has arrived this week, packing last-minute enhancements that promise to elevate the remote desktop experience and notification system for users of the popular Linux desktop environment.
The built-in remote desktop server receives significant performance and compatibility improvements, while Plasma notifications gain visual and functional upgrades. These changes were finalized just before the beta cutoff, according to KDE developers.
Remote Desktop Server Overhaul
The remote desktop server, which allows users to access their Plasma desktop from other devices, now supports better frame rates and lower latency. "We've reworked the pipeline to reduce lag and improve responsiveness," said KDE developer Jan Grulich. "This makes it viable for more demanding use cases like video playback."
Improvements include enhanced support for Wayland sessions and better integration with RDP clients. Users can expect smoother cursor movements and faster screen updates.
Notification Enhancements
Plasma notifications receive a visual refresh with improved animations and clearer grouping. Notifications from different applications are now better organized, reducing clutter. "We redesigned the notification stack to prioritize important alerts," explained KDE contributor Aleix Pol Gonzalez. "Users will notice fewer missed notifications."
New features include configurable notification timeout and action buttons that appear inline. Notifications also adapt to system theme changes more consistently.
Background
KDE Plasma is one of the most customizable Linux desktop environments, used by distributions like KDE neon, Fedora KDE, and Kubuntu. The 6.x series introduced a major transition to Qt6 and Wayland, with ongoing refinements. This beta marks the final feature stage before the stable release, expected within weeks.
KDE's development cycle typically includes several beta versions followed by release candidates. The current beta follows months of community testing and bug reports.
What This Means
For Linux users, the remote desktop improvements make Plasma a more viable option for professional use where remote access is critical. The notification enhancements improve daily workflow efficiency. "These updates show KDE's commitment to polishing the user experience even at the beta stage," said analyst Jim Salter of Ars Technica. "Plasma 6.7 is shaping up to be a solid release."
Users on the stable branch should expect these features in the final release. Early adopters can test the beta now. The full changelog includes dozens of bug fixes and performance optimizations.
